![]() I based myself in three places: Les Eyzies, Sarlat, and Vezac (near the Dordogne river). I found the OUI app (on my ipad) useful for booking train tickets. Though they’re not plentiful, there will be suitable trains when the timetable is published. Don't be discouraged if you search in February and you can’t find a suitable train. But the train timetable for September wasn’t published until about June/July. Things to note about trains: I travelled in early September, which I think is an excellent time. Actually, I didn’t see any other walkers on the roads!) I think drivers made greater concessions for cyclists than walkers. Little-to-no verge for a walker, but manageable with care. (Mind you, walking on these roads was also a little fraught. Hiring a bicycle would also be a good option near the Dordogne river, but I don’t have good peripheral vision, so it’s too fraught for me on the roads. My transport was a combination of trains, two small-group tours, and walking. More time would have been great, but 7 days was enough to see all the things I wanted to see. I spent 7 full days in the Dordogne, not counting 2 days spent flying into/out of Bordeaux and travelling by train to the area. (Also, in general, taxis are not available or are very expensive in this area, so you need to walk to/from train stations, etc.) So travelling with a light backpack is the way to go. My plan involved walking a few kms with my luggage at one point. I’m not particularly fit, but have no mobility issues and don’t mind walking moderate distances. ![]() I’m a 63-year old woman, travelling alone. ![]() I’ll try to cover the important logistical points. But I had a very satisfying trip without a car in early September, and ‘ticked all the boxes’ on my wish list and more. Very discouraging! It’s true that public transport in the Dordogne is very limited (close to non-existent!), and having a car opens up lots more possibilities. When I started researching my options for visiting this very special area without a car (in early 2018), I found NO information about how to do this – only lots of advice that you need a car. I recently had a wonderful visit to the Dordogne, without a car, and I promised I’d post a report on my trip for others who want to do the same. ![]()
